From the news letter:

Up to 8Mbps broadband - the truth

I'm paying for 8Mb and only getting 6Mb - so I'm paying for a service I'm not getting! - A common statement from broadband customers all over the UK. So what is the truth behind up to 8Mb broadband?

The real issue lies with the "up to" part of "up to 8Mb broadband". Karoo Max is based on ADSL technology, which has the potential to provide connection speeds as high as 8Mbps downstream. However, only a tiny proportion of users will ever experience this speed. The truth is, "up to" really is "up to". Your broadband speed will be determined by a number of factors, most of which are outside of the control of the ISP. Not how much we allow you to have. The main factor affecting your speed is distance from the exchange. And by distance we don't mean eye view, it's literally the distance the cables and wiring have travelled from the exchange into your home.

Ofcom, the independent regulator and competition authority for the UK communications industries, has also expressed a widespread concern about the difference between the "up to" speeds advertised and the actual speeds experienced by many UK subscribers. The Chairman of the Ofcom Consumer Panel, has written to the UK's six leading ISPs to seek their views about how this problem might be addressed.

LOL I get 8Mbps connection, yet the throughput is dreadful, Its out of the ISPs control? I think not. Its out of my control thats for sure, these bullshit statements piss me off.

Why does this mask entirely the shaped abortion that is definately the ISPs control. I wish I got 6Mb throughgput... Wink

What a load of rubbish. Easy to disprove in very few steps.

1.) Go to http://www.karoo.co.uk/helpandsupport/downloads/test.html
2.) Download one of the test files and note the download speed
3.) Go to a website which isn't hosted inside the KC network (www.download.com for instance)
4.) Download a file from this site and note the download speed
6.) Compare the speeds

The speed you get when downloading files from inside of the KC network is greater than the speed you get from downloading from outside of the network. How has that anything to do with your distance from the exchange. It's more to do with the amount of bandwidth Karoo is allowing you to have from the meagre amount they purchase off their own network.

Stormy see my post here >>>>    http://karooforums.net/index.php/topic,110.0.html

IMHO to be able to sell a service as "upto" 8meg there MUST be a chance (however remote) of the customer achieving something approaching that speed.    I was told that the SNR on my line meant that I couldnt support more than 2meg stable..... which was TOTAL COMPLETE OLLOX given I had moved from a stable 3meg service ..... this was the point where the rat started to smell rather badly and as I told the techie feller..... "how the FFFFFFFF can u call 2meg "upto 8meg" u are talking out of your Arse now put someone on the fone that knows what they are talking about"

At times I am convinced they employ PC World's rejects
