Alrighty, First off my names Ryan.
I'm currently on the old Unlimited line; which is an old ADSL 1 line.
I've been on the phone today with karoo tech support, and from where i'm currently living, i get under 1 MB BB, split between 2 machines, this averages at around 100 KB/s download speeds, which for what i do on the computer, is nowhere near enough.
I asked about upgrading and if we go onto any of the packages, which are 24Mb, we will only receive 3 Mb BB, for ADSL +2 this is insane, we have a rather long line but still, how much will this improve my internet?
I game alot, so latency, uptime and ping are a massive thing, but also download speeds - WoW patches (e.g 800Mb) @ 100 Kb/s is just insanely slow.
My postcode is HU54PH i will PM my housephone number to a tech support person if needed.
I just really need to know what the difference will be, and if it is substantional enough to even upgrade.
Regards,
Ryan.

Hi Ryan, you're just around the corner from me. I am also on the old MAX packages and recieve 2mb, expecting 5mb if I upgrade to adsl2+.
I would expect ping to be the same as you would have with your current line maybe slightly decrease but not significantly, mainly a faster download speed. Your upload speed is just as, if not more, important for gaming as your download speed.
That isn't a substantial increase in terms of high figures for this day and age but I suppose you could consider it a 300% speed increase. There are also other factors to consider like the traffic shaping which is heavily enfored on these old MAX packages. "To encourage people to move to the newer pagages" or something like that, Karoo said. Basicly on the newer packages you should in theory be able to stream much better than the old packages, due to this shaping. You wouldn't be able to stream HD iPlayer with 3MB though.
I personally choose not to upgrade to the newer packages because I know I would do alot more downloading/streaming if I had a faster connection, but I would then get stung by the overusage charges. Because you don't pay enough for the connection already aparently.
Gripe aside, I would consider maybe giving the services provided by Air Net a look at, although the ping timings may put you off. I'm wanting to upgrade to them but the ping times are just too high for my liking at the moment. When/if they come down I will move to them for my BB services, but untill then I will put up with what I have now. I wouldn't want to sign a new contract with Karoo for 12 month's anyway, not after been with them for about 10 years already probably more.
Hope this helps a bit

Which Max package are you currently on, and which of the new packages would you be upgrading to? The difference between 1mb and 3mb would certainly be noticeable.

Hi gareth, I understand your points, I would probably stream and download as much as i do now, and im hitting 17Gb monthly MAX. so with the 3mb net i probably wont go over 30-40, so I'm sure the 50Gb package would be substantial. @ Rich, I'm currently on the OLD unlimited package, which is ADSL1, I'm looking to go onto rather Mid3 or Pro1 as i'd like the extra 50Gb safety for an extra Fiver? but i need to know how much of a difference i'll see. I roughly hit 100 Kb/s download speed now, having the new connection; which karoo told me i'll get arounf 3Mb net, what would you say i'd acheive? 300 Kb/s? Thanks for your time guys. Regards, Ryan.

As a rule you divide by eight (and then I personally round down), so...
(1024Kbit/s * 3) / 8 = 384Kbit/s
So, yeah, about 300Kbit/s should be what you recieve.

That sounds a hell of alot better; I'd rather download 10Gb games in 3 hours, rather than 9.
My main problem is the speed it actually connects to things, I'm sick of waiting for a webpage to load, which has intensive content, and it takes a whole 30 seconds to get there.
Or trying to watch a 10 min Video, in decent quality, which takes 15 mins to Buffer.
Aslong as the increase will be substantional and make browsing/gaming smoother, im gonna hit the upgrade button me thinks!

My old Karoo connection was 3mb, perfectly fast enough for web browsing and (if you're patient) fine for downloading. If it's only a few £s extra a month, or you're not really constrained in the money department then I'd say go for it - well worth upgrading.

On ADSL1, my household could receive 512kb/s-1mb.
On ADSL2+, I currently receive a stable 4MB, with fantastic ping rates of 20ms, which for gaming, is excellent. Playing FIFA 10 on-line, is like playing off-line, the latency is so good.
Well worth the upgrade, you will be very happy with the improvements, in all areas of your internet experience.

if you do go for the new packages there is a profile called the 'inclusive' Line Spectrum profile that you can be put on (thank FKCE for sharing this info in another post). Karoo has put me on this and I have forced my modem onto ADSL2 Annex L which is for long line lengths and gives better speeds than ADSL2+. I am 4.1 Km from the exchange and have a stable connection of 5120Kb/s when most people in my area are getting 3500Kb/s.

I'm not sure how many different profiles there are, the only ones I have had experience of are 6dB and 3dB profiles. 3dB will normally give faster sync speeds but will not be as stable as the 6db profile but beyond that I don't know much else.
for setting up your modem it depends on your distance from the exchange. ASDL2+ is better for speed when you have a short line length but once you exceed 4Km line length ADSL2 annex L will normally result in a faster more stable connection.
