I'm curious.  I moved from BT to Karoo when they expanded into East Yorkshire and they ported my number over.
When shifting back to BT does anyone know if number porting is available??

(mind you, with new copper, I'm getting 8mbps all the time (well to the exchange anyway) whereas BT is ancient overhead lines).

As far as I'm aware I don't think that Karoo are allowed to refuse to port the number if you ask them to. The only way I think they can get away with saying no is if its not technically possible. Considering that Karoo ported your number from BT in the first place you'd think it likely that they should be able to port it back again. If you really want to be sure though you are best off giving Karoo a bell to check.

I think it's possible in areas where they both serve and where it is technically possible.

Hi, I can confirm it is possible to port numbers away but it takes months.

We are currently testing some number ports which should go through quicker, but these are for business customers  Undecided

Hi Martin

Your number can be ported back to BT as number porting agreements between communication providers must be reciprocol. KC cannot refuse your request to port your number back to BT.

But your not BT...

The number porting should be a strait forward thing I would have thought.

OK thanks all, I'll let you know how it goes on. I'm currently canvassing the neighbours to see if any are still with BT and what speeds are like.
Certainly there are no outsiders with a presence in the local BT exchange, so that isn't too promising.

KC do not like people porting off their network, there has not been a need before as you couldn't get lines from anyone else.

Now with VoIP, SIP and our new network there is a real need, especially for businesses.

I used to work for KC and number porting was not an option for customers, I don't think you will find anyone that has done it yet  Wink

Hi D

KC (KCOM) use their national porting agreement outside Hull in order to port (number transfer) between KCOM and all other CP's. KC use this "reciprocol" agreements in the KC East Yorkshire Expansion area's of Gilberdyke, North Cave, South Cave etc where KC has expanded their network into these areas using a combination of fibre optic cables, street cabinets and short distance copper where they can also provide  broadband services.

This agreements allow's end users to retain their existing phone number but with a new physical connection enabling users to easily transfer services between providers such as KC, Talk Talk, Vigin and BT OUTSIDE the 01482 Hull area where Ofcom have helped create a very competitive market.

KC argue that this agreement does not include for KC fixed line services in the Hull area. In the old fixed telecoms world you could only port to the same physical location.

I would strongly argue that as we are in the new VoIP world and that KC have no wish to offer VoIP to customers of its fixed line services in the KC area Ofcom should force KC under its current porting agreement to allow other communication providers to migrate numbers to its platforms in line with the rest of the UK. Under this reciprocol arrangement, this would also allow KC to migrate numbers back to them should the end user wish this.

Why dont Ofcom seek to create the same competitative market for Hull?Huh???

Good luck to the One Point in achieving this as this would help create the opportunity for the introduction/ delivery of VoIP SIP trunking services in the Hull area over shared wireless, SDSL, Ethernet and dedicated ADSL IP service connectivity services without the requirement for Hull businesses to pay for expensive dedicated ISDN30 services - just like in the rest of the UK !!!!

I got a pushy call from TalkTalk offering 18mbps in Leconfield.
Odd as Leconfield shows no LLU's at all.
They also said I would have to have a new phone number - even though there are two old unused BT overhead lines here.
I declined their offer.

Number porting from KC is only possible if the supplier you are looking to go with enters into a porting agreement with KC. KC can not by law refuse to enter such agreement but it is a struggle to talk the supplier you are thinking of moving to into setting this up with KC.

Though I don't understand why they don't do it as surely once it is in place they can then use it to their hearts content!!
