Hey I contacted kijoma.net a couple of days ago, just noticed I had a reply in my inbox.

Hi,

Interesting read, we are always interested in new areas and yours sounds a new angle. Will take a look when we get some spare time and see what our options are.

Cheers

Fingers crossed, they seem to do quite well in the 2008 ISPAs' finalists for Best Wireless ISP

Well done Miken,
did you point them to this forum as a good read of the problems we have?
Tell them i live on the hill in Hessle and can see the south bank, i would be quite happy to act as a bridge into Hull if it meant Krapoo have competition!!

Smiley

also pointing them to these forums will make them realise they will have a set of ready made salespeople for their service!

but again.. a good bit of forward thinking!

hi all

Just thought i'd pop in as interested in the potential for providing an alternative offering.

We do wide area networks covering some 1000's of sq km  so would be interested in locations that overlook towns their etc.. We don't do mesh or use wifi so latency and interference is not an issue.

can anybody pm some post codes or six fig grids?

cheers

Hi Bill,

The KC network pretty much covers Hull and surrounding areas...

http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=hull&ie=UTF8&ll=53.788483,-0.360146&spn=0.151307,0.362549&z=12

One problem with the local topography tends to be that the land is pretty flat. Bring up the area on Google Earth and take a look around. (for a really quick look check out the terrain view on the google maps link).

hi,

There is a water tower it appears at Swanland to the West, our maps show this to be a potentially good site for a 120 degree arc antenna covering ~20km across Hull.

is it tall?

Have a look on http://www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/oswebsite/ for heights.

Edit: found it http://getamap.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/getamap/frames.htm?mapAction=gaz&gazName=g&gazString=SE987277

How high land would you need to cover the whole area? and I take it the system allows for expansion? like adding another at the other side of hull in the future?

P.S. Id like to have it in Swanland only 5km away from myself.

Edit: also I know there are people further west in Brough that cant get bt aswell.

If I get an hour or two today, I'll try get up there, take a photo and establish the height.

Perhaps, but it would be interesting to get an overview of the landscape and features surrounding it don't you think? I've just been talking so someone who suggested that that location is obscured by hills?

Anyway - its sunny :-)

looks good.

http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=hull&mrt=all&ie=UTF8&ll=53.737886,-0.498784&spn=0.006029,0.020084&t=h&z=16

google maps shows it. the ground tails off from there eastwards which means i suspect Hull is predominantly visible from up there. It is sufficiently far enough away (yes too close is a problem) to cover a significant area without the need for masts.

It looks like it would also link south where we can backhaul from "outside the area" Smiley

the picture shows it doesn't have any present aerials, ours would neatly fit on or flush between the verticals of the railing. however i suspect we are going to need to find who manages the tower and whether they would allow it, regardless of how asthetic an aerial can be made to blend in.

Cheers
