I would be interested to know what sort of line stats people are getting from their routers etc. I was told last week that someone in our street has a freeview box that is giving out so much noise it is interfering with everyones ADSL lines!?

I'm about 3km from my exchange and my Netgear router reports:

ADSL Link Downstream / Upstream

Connection Speed   2966 kbps     446 kbps
Line Attenuation      56 db           19.5 db
Noise Margin           12 db           21 db

Here are my stats - out in Hessle...
I used to live around Wold road area and the stats where awful..
I used to see around 40,000+ CRC errors per day.
This link has been up for around 2 weeks now and i use it to stream out music via shoutcast sometimes.
It seems that i get a fairly regular service for my £39 a month, at least i am not bandwidth shaped as much as the 8meg (lmfao!!) connections..

How the hell can they call it 8meg..  lies - damn lies and 8meg connections..

                                              Downstream   Upstream
 SNR (Signal-to-Noise-Ratio) margin    26.8  25.0   dB
 Line attenuation                                 21.3  13.0   dB
 Errored seconds                                    18  4
 Loss of signal                                           0  0
 Loss of frame                                           0  0
 CRC errors                                             53  4
 Data rate                                           3456 448   kbps

Sonic - whats the cable like from your adsl box?  This last metre is the most important part of the connection.  I purchased a quality shielded cable and it improved the data throughput and reduced the CRC errors...?

Im just running with what came in the box at the minute. I may try something better in the future, but as several people in the street are all experiencing the same problems and we have a KC van out in the street most mornings im pretty certain the problem lies outside my residence. Sad

Perhaps it's looking for the noisy freeview box Matt Wink

The latest report from said 'van' is that they have found the problamatic freeview box but as the owner does not currently have a KC contract they have no 'leverage' (quite what they were going to do to the poor woman if they she did have a contract i have no idea!). They have also informed us that the freeviewing resident is unwilling to let KC buy her a new freeview box.......

Obviously quite happy with the one for a tenner from macro...

Does anyone else find it a little worrying that a whole street of homes can be knocked off Kingstons pioneering network as the result of one individuals desire to watch 'How to look good naked'..........?

I'm going back to playing with teletext now.... ITS FASTER! Smiley

lmfao...
Matt - i take it your from Hull?  so this rouge person using a highly illegal military jammer/freeview box has a KC telephone?  So therefore she has a contract with KC?

Saying that, a microwave a few doors from me is close to going critical so may kill half of the KC network without an effort..

Why do KC treat their customers with such little regard and fob them off with crappy excuses...  unless....
they are using this:

http://pages.cs.wisc.edu/~ballard/bofh/bofhserver.pl

keep at them Matt... dont let them get away with it...

Wierd - This just doesn't make sense. I think Karoo are telling porkie pies!

If there is a freeview box causing interference to other people's telephones then by that rationale it must be plugged into the telephone network musn't it? If it's plugged into the telephone network, then the person must have a contract with KC.

The only other alternative is that the freeview box isn't plugged into a phone socket, but the interference from it is still zapping all of the Karoo lines down your street. If that is the case then I'd have thought that Karoo hadn't properly shielded their cables from interference which means they need replacing.

Either way, it's still KC's fault and they need to get it fixed. I'd send them email marked Formal Complaint and demand a resolution!

What cable you using? Id like to boost up my snr in evening abit or sync speed perhaps.

Current Stats

Data rate (Kbps)         7616  448
Noise margin (dB)       6.5     14.0
Output power (dBm)   17.3   7.1
Attenuation (dB)         24.0  19.0

During day snr downstream is 12, if i restarted router i could probably get snr upto 8 or 9 at moment.

I'm on option 4 but asked them to cap my speed not long after moving onto max (Around December last year) because of bad dc problems. They capped my speed to 3meg and I've had a stable connection ever since. Which is more than I can say about the speed. I average around 1500kb/s but on good days I get around 2500kb/s. I had problems for a couple of weeks after Karoo had their routing problem which saw my speeds drop to between 500 - 700kb/s. Needless to say, I was straight on the phone asking them to get it sorted.

Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 448 / 2,752

Output Power (Up/Down) [dBm]: 11.5 / 16.5

Line Attenuation (Up/Down) [dB]: 25.5 / 38.0

SN Margin (Up/Down) [dB]: 23.0 / 11.0

If it wasn't for the static IP on option 4, I'd have dropped to option 1.

Marko,
can you not drop to option 1 and use http://www.dyndns.com/services/dns/dyndns/ with a client to get a domain name?

8128/448 - Brough Exchange - Option 2

noise margin downstream: 11 db
output power upstream: 11 db
attenuation downstream: 20 db

noise margin upstream: 31 db
output power downstream: 19 db
attenuation upstream: 13 db

My downstream noise has been dropping and dropping steadily, it used to be around 16 - 17db.

No Idea why but if it keeps going I am going to get line instability. Out of interest I just forced it to reconnect and its back up to 15 db. What could cause such a big shift? The line conditions should not be changing and my installing in the house has not changed.

Now:

noise margin downstream: 15 db
output power upstream: 11 db
attenuation downstream: 20 db

Hi Miken,
i would suggest a shielded cable, something along the lines of:
(I posted the first link found but suggest you shop around - ebuyer, etc to find good price)
http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=45162&doy=27m9&C=SO&U=strat15 but also make sure you are using the minimum of phones on your connection and use quality filters.
You could ask KC to boost the gain on the line (amp the signal) but i reckon it would fall on deaf ears!
