Hi
Does anyone know of any ports that karoo are not throttling for NNTP traffic?

I currently use ports 443 and 563 (SSL) and at peak times they die a death
Now i know other usenet providers can offer alternative port numbers to the ones i use (SSL) but it means me having to switch providers,
if it makes no difference then id rather stick with the deal i have.

Ive heard of technology used by ISP's to sniff packets for NNTP like deep packet sniffing but i have heard thats
expensive, so i would seriously doubt karoo would pay for any technology thats expensive.
So im thinking it may all be just port based traffic shaping

Anyone had any luck on ports other than 443/563?

They use Deep Packet Inspection so it won't matter what port you use for NNTP it will still see it and shape it accordingly. Only way to avoid the shaping is to tunnel everything through a VPN/SSH service.

Wish i knew how to do just that. Had a quick read on tunnel shaping and think its something i'd struggle to do.

SSH is a pain to setup but VPN is very simple. Most providers will give you a script that will automatically set up the connection. once connected everything will connect through it instead of your normal connection.

Karoo would give a VPN script to avoid their own throttling? Surely not!

I think somebody should write a mini tutorial on this, or at least PM me with instructions haha.

Do a search for vpn services or secret web browsing , have a look for a cheap service ,most are quite cheap for a full years subscription .
To test just take out a month with one of them ,you will get a script or small exe to run , mine puts a little icon on my tool bar ,you can switch tunneling on or off via this ,

Then for a test  run a torrent at peak time  ,then turn on your vpn tunnel and run the same torrent you will then see what the benifits are ,

Just be careful on what priovider you look at getting your vpn from as quite a lot are now banning p2p traffic.

Wants to use nntp not torrents so shouldn't be a problem.

Personally I prefer ssh tunnel/socks proxy, since I can tell just the programs I want to use it instead of all traffic, so I can still use the internet without possibly increasing pings etc.

A uk vps will cost around £5, us based cheapest around $5 higher pings but shouldn't matter if it isn't a time sensitive service.

I just use putty google for guides, or the ssh command if on mac/Linux.
Edit: just got around to actually installing a socks server I chose antinat appears to work much faster than using ssh running at max speed line can do (from usa server)

A VPN is far easier and there are lots of sites selling access for similar prices to a VPS.
