I'm hazarding a guess, but I do wonder if a large proportion of the instability seen by wireless customers could be attributed to too many devices sharing the same frequencies.

We now have a few wireless ISPs in Hull, all delivering service over unlicensed frequencies that are jam packed with activity. It is really surprising that people see inconsistent results? In addition to the congestion, all it takes is for one provider to operate some kit at a higher than legal power setting and bang - all the other providers in range are knocked out or rendered unstable.

It'd be interesting to get a spectrum analyser and do a bit of a 'site survey' around a few areas to see just how congested the 2.4 and 5Ghz frequencies are. Thoughts anyone?

possible dylan but then agian, SBB and nextgenus have only just started doing installs on a wider area, they was no other wireless provider in east hull until nextgenus moved in and the only other was quickline and well, we all saw how that ended up

We have been running spectrum analyzers for a while now and there is banks of interference all the way through the 5ghz frequency range, for the most part this is not a problem as we are below this noise level though there are times when it causes problems.

We are now actively pursuing the root of this interference as it is our belief that it is faulty equipment as nothing should cover the spectrumas fully as this signal does. It will be interesting when we find the source though for now it doesn't present any major problems.

All the same it would be nice to have a chat with the other wireless providors and maybe make a gentlemans agreement over which frequency each of our companies will operate on that way at least we can rule out each other as a source of interference.

I can't speak for East Hull as we do not cover that area as yet but when/if interference kicks in it will affect any providor no matter what.

This is something that I think should be brought up the next time we all have a meeting like the one yesterday.

@Dunny

It's not so much staying off them at the point of install.

It is whether or not the frequencies are changed at a later date.

This is only avoidable if as I say a gentlemans agreement is made.

Sounds like a plan to me.

I wonder if there is some way that we as karooforums.net could help the wireless providers out? I understand that none of the providers would want to log installation details to an area owned by one of the other providers, so perhaps we could offer some neutral territory.

Here are some suggestions....

Frequency database to allow the wireless providers to look up who else is using a frequency in a certain area.
Private forum area to allow wireless providers to communicate with one and other.

Let me know if you're interested or have any other suggestions.

I'm not desperate to do the work Wink it's just an offer to help out if needed. Grin

I think I'll just put it out there and if anyone wants to take us up on it then get in touch. If not, then that's fine too.

I'm up for anything that helps as we are not enemies...just competitors.

Competition is good, it's exactly what this city needs.

Dylan if you want to set this up by all means we will join in!!

Given NGU have their own forum I foresee issues.

Maybe a better idea would be a Google Doc, shared by Dylan to the management of the Wireless Providers agreeing to this?

We will have a private forum soon too...though I will be maintaining a presence on here.

But yeah whatever you want to set up will help, us wireless providors would have to be stupid to not want something like this in place!

Given massive sulks and threats I've had from NGU and Airnet in the past when they see posts they don't like on our forum and demand we delete them immediately I don't hold out a great deal of confidence for any provider run forums lol!  Grin
