Are you ready to be shocked at how much we pay for Internet in Hull?

This area describes how much each mbps (according to surveys and speedtests done at speedtest.net) costs on average in USD per month. Notice that it suggests the average cost of each mpbs of data in the UK is $3.76USD per month.

Scroll down a bit, click on 'BY IP ADDRESS' and then click on 'Kingston Upon Hull'. Now note the monthly cost of each mbps of data in Hull. $6.61USD.

No, you didn't read that wrong, it's $6.61USD. According to these results Hull is one of the most expensive places in the UK for Internet access in terms of what you actually get for your money.

A bit more digging into the stats shows that this isn't all.

This area describes what Net Index refer to as 'promise'. Promise is a measure of the speed your ISP actually gets to you, as compared to the subscribed to or 'promised' speed. You can find Hull's figures tucked away in the 'BY IP ADDRESS' section again.

Notice that the UK's average promise ratio is 65.02%. And Hull's? 51.50%

Again, Hull is right down there at the bottom rung of the ladder. Sad eh? Not only do we pay a lot for what we get, what we actually do get is nothing like what we sign up for!

Thanks to Ookla for making this data available. It just goes to prove when you look at the hard statistics rather than the corporate spin that we get a pretty bum deal here in Hull.

And here's a sarcastic nod toward Ofcom. Thanks for protecting us guys.

A big ouch! I know NextGenUs customers are few at the moment compared to Karoo's mostly captive audience but with NGU's back haul coming from KC and the busy little fingers of some of the NGU's customers (not me your honour Wink ) testing speeds via speedtest.net, the figures are probably a little false in Karoo's favour.

To be fair, I think the wireless customers are a pretty insignificant drop on the ocean compare to the fixed line ones. I doubt their stats make that much difference.

You are right though, whatever difference nextgenus or other small businesses make would swing the balance on KC's favour.

That data still has a lot of dial-up as a factor, wheras most other ISP seem to have avoided it somehow when they switched over.
