Right guys there has been a lot of talk about the copper in the ground in the KC area.
To try and put this to bed I will outline what has happened.

1, The post office never owned KC

2, KC have a large density of exchanges so the quality of copper was not required as the E side (exchange) was such a short distance and it’s a lot cheaper.

3, The D side (customer) is a reasonable standard and KC have been using BT standard equipment for many years now and if new install or add move change the old copper is replaced (drop wires UG joints etc).

4, as the E side is so poor ADSL just works ADSL2 would require the use of 2 pairs so the line plant would come under massive pressure as they just don’t have the wires in the ground to cope with a role out.

So in conclusion the network is creaking under its own inadequacy ADSL2 the Mecca of broadband is not going to be rolled out easily and if it is the equipment would have to cope with substandard connections and this will cost KC more!!!.
The network is crap and the only way anything is going to happen is if we have a new network.

Yeh, I personally don't see that happening although my mate is still adament that BT have assured him "They are coming" but I honestly cannot see BT investing the ammount of capital required to do the job. I think he must have just spoke to some droid who had no clue, but he argues its not true. I am tempted to ring BT myself.

Also, if the poor KC network is not upto ADSL2 I am not suprised why its not been quick to come. Its strange also that when I first got Max my line which is always 8128 connection has seen its Downstream SNR fall steadily. When Max was first installed I got 17-18db and now it can be as low as 10-11db. Maybe the whole network is just chocking under the strain. No doubt if KC make ADSL2 available it will be fubar, especially on my line.

Well I know if they did it, there would be a very large number of people willing to pay to have it. I would pay quite hefty install fee's personally for a BT line myself if it was available.

Nope, ADSL/ADSL2 is ALWAYS provided over ONE PAIR of wires, I.E. 2 WIRES that are already coming to every house. Unless it is a specialist bonded service which is different...

All that ADSL2 changes is the frequency which is used over the COPPER PAIR.

Another thing, it was post office telephones in the early days, else why would the old man hole covers say Post Office Telegraphs, PO and GPO on them, also the oldest green PCP cabs say PO on them.... Research...

Using 2 pair is an old trick to reduce the impedance over a length of copper this allows the signal to be transported with less frequency loss so using 2 pairs is a common trick within all copper line plant.
Mainly used on ISDN 2 and ISDN30e service when the line conditions aren’t suitable for the service transition. Engineers are supposed to report a 1038 notice on the line and have it replaced but guess what they want to go home so steal the next free pair.

Oh a little history for you!!!!

1882 Invited to bid for telephone licences, only 55 of 1334 UK local authorities expressed an interest. Hull Corporation, part of the City Council, was among them. Called on to support the establishment of a local telephone service, just 28 of 600 local businesses declared their enthusiasm, but in 1902 the Council gained its first licence to operate services in the Kingston upon Hull area.

1904 The Hull Telephone Department opened its first exchange at the former Trippett Street Baths.

1914 Hull's bid to renew its licence was made conditional on its purchase of the National Telephone network infrastructure for £192,423. The Council gave the go-ahead, securing the future of the country's only remaining municipally-owned Corporation.

1954 To celebrate its Golden Jubilee, Hull Corporation produced Golden Pages, a Yellow Pages® forerunner printed on gold paper and distributed with a classified business section.

1987 The Hull City Telephone Department became Kingston Communications (HULL) PLC, a company in its own right, though still 100% owned by the Council.

Now can you tell me anywhere where it says PO or GPOabove.
The green boxes (PCP’s) and ground boxes (UG joints are standard in BT world they were all made by the same company and at the time they didn’t feel the need to brand the equipment.

now ill let you get back to your Wii,XBOX720 thingy me bob and let the old engineer rest  Grin

Think we'll have to agree to disagree on some points Smiley
