Looks like they use different frequencies which used to be used for TV signals, but since thing are changing and going digital, these are now free.

I imagine they can have such vast distances (quoted up to 62 miles) because there is nothing else on those frequencies, and it is in effect a clear pathway?

I would take the max distances with a pinch of salt, they are rarely true.

But yeah the max distances are quoted with a totaly clear pathway
