Tonight I tried to scan a £20 note because I was gonna replace the queen's face with my mate's face for a joke but my all in one printer scanner refused to do it. It said the following,

 Banknote detected while scanning
The current scan or copy job has been canceled.

The current scan or copy job cannot proceed because this product does not support the unauthorized scan or copy of banknotes.

And sent me to this  Huh?

I got around it by downloading a pic of one.

Yeah my old Mustek scanner could too. I think its pretty stupid that new ones are blocked. Aye, copies look pretty but you'd have to be pretty stupid to think one was real.

Exactly, a home scanner will not have adequate resolution to make convincing copies of money, otherwise people would have been doing it for years... It'd be interesting to know how it detects it though.

That got me thinking so I've just tried the same using the photo copier side of the printer and it copied the 20 no problem. Is the recognition built into windows maybe?

@marko; It may be a driver-level feature, if that is the case it is probably possible to disable this feature, but it's probably more trouble than it's worth.

Yeah true, it was only for a jolly. I soon got one from the internet to keep us amused.  Grin

While on the subject of money. I paid some money into building society this morning and had a twenty handed back to me because the corner of the note was missing that had one of the serial numbers on (the other serial number was still as clear as anything) and told they couldn't accept it. The girl said a shop will probably take it no problem.
