Author Topic: Faulty TV - Any Ideas?  (Read 422 times)

Hi everyone.  I have a digital TV (out of warranty by 2 months - so arguably not fit for purpose) that for some reason takes about 5/10 minutes to show a proper picture when it is switched on first thing in the morning (no problem with the sound).  This only happens when it is switched on first thing in the morning. This has been happening a couple of weeks.  If you then turn the TV off and leave it for a few hours (ie until it cools down) it starts normally - no probs at all.  It is just the first switch on in the morning that's the prob. I have disconnected everything from the TV and put the aerial direct into the TV but still the same problem happens in the morning. It has been re-tuned to the digi channels with no problem - I have also tried re-tuning it again and that hasn't resolved the problem.

When you turn the TV on (only first thing in the morning) the picture is blank, then you get grey stripes turning to something like purple stripes and then you get a proper picture that freezes and then jumps ahead and you get a different picture thats frozen. As mentoned above the sound is ok though.   After 5/10 minutes the TV then resumes as normal with absolutely no problem.  Even if you switch the TV off and on again or switch the TV off for 3 hours and turn it back on its fine!  Its only a problem first thing in the morning!  Yep it's a JVC!

Not heared of this before, one of our TV's that was just purchased within last month always has a slow turn on time. But thats just down to the TV been poor.

What TV do you have and have you had any similar problems with other TV's in the house before (using the same aerial and cable). If not then it does sound faulty and if its out of warranty you don't really have much choice but to put up with it, or buy a new TV. If you just watch TV without full HD gaming or blu-rays you can get some really nice TV's in the £250 region. Samsung and Sony are my fav's

Thanks 4 reply - its JVC LT-37DV1BJ - problem is with TV cos its same whether pic thru the aerial or satellite.

Even if its outside the warranty the manufacturer can still be sued as the goods are not deemed "fit for purpose".  I remember reading article about guy in similar situation who took the manufacturer to the small claims court and won arguing that although the TV was outside the 12 month warranty it was to be expected that a TV would last longer than 15 months and so was "not fit for its purpose".  The Judge found in his favour (I think the Judge said that it was reasonable to expect a TV to last for up to 5 years). Unfortunately with this being a low court it does not set a precedence.

there has been cases of problems like this happening with some TV's, it is probably worth emailing JVC directly as some manufacturers will repair faults like this out of warranty
One of the lads I work with had a similar issue with his TV and they fixed it free of charge but can't remember if it was JVC or Samsung.
His fault was down to a faulty batch of Capacitors used at manufacture hence them replacing the component FOC.

@moggers - cheers for that.  Have been on the phone to JVC and emailed the receipt and info to them but of course its Friday and so everyone in customer service has gone home for the weekend!

Faulty caps cause the majority of problems with electronics these days. If it is only 15 months old then harass them for a repair.

@DarkJester - cheers for reply.  Well its the softly softly approach first and hope that they are reasonable and have some good customer services.  If not then its all the way to small claims as its "not fit for purpose".

@bobthebuilder - good idea, hopefully it wont get to that stage but if it does then a letter notifying them that I will get a report done and then add the cost of it to the CCJ amount will cover me and give them another chance!  You know though, JVC might just surprise me and sort it ?!

You never know, often depends on whose desk it lands on and wether they got some the night before...  Roll Eyes

The last 5 non white goods items I had fail on me have been down to faulty caps.

2xNetgear Switches
Onkyo HDMI Amp
LG Plasma (tuning board)
Computer PSU.

Shocking really, its kinda the open/dirty secret the electronics keep. Might not be caps though.  Undecided
