All my common ports come back as closed, but not stealthed, so I'm guessing that Shields Up is pinging my Nano rather than my router as the router firewall is set not to respond to ping requests.

port 22 is SSH which is running on the nano. You will need to ask Airnet to open the ports you need and forward them to your router. Then all you need to do is to forward them from the router to the computer hosting the services.

I'm not sure what the problem, and it seems NGU don't know either, what the issue is with FTP at the moment. Uploading or downloading files via FTP causes the connection to hang.

My solution to that was to use sftp. it can be slow but at least it works and has the added bonus of being encrypted.

sFTP/SCP uses an SSH session to send and receive files. You will need to install and configure an SSH server like OpenSSH which i believe works on windows. you still will need ports forwarded and also remember that your nano has an SSH server running on port 22 so set the server to use another port like 222.

Incredibly slow, the point of the fast upload for me was to be able to upload at fast speeds :-P

I expect it is because ftp needs more than just one port opened.
You need tcp ports 20 (data) and 21 (commands) (n and n + 1 if running on different ports)
Those ports will allow you to use ftp in active mode (you will need to set your ftp client to use active mode instead of passive mode)
If that works though then you should setup for passive ftp which needs ports 21 and > 1023 forwarded (the ftp server replies to the client telling it what port it wants you to connect on) I don't know what firewalls are being used but you can place better restrictions on the ports than just opening them (but I really don't know anything about that you would be better waiting for a networking person to come along)

Most firewalls and NAT know about FTP and will monitor the command channel and open/forward the necessary ports as the need arises.
The easiest way to work this though is if:
The server has no outgoing port restrictions, and the client has no incoming port restrictions, use active ftp on client (client will open port and tell the server to send data on it)
The server has no incoming port restructions, and the client has outgoing port restrictions, use passive ftp on the client ( server will open port and tell client to send data on it)
