Atleast there is competition starting in the mobile broadband market, the O2 ones are unlimited usage up until October, O2 have a habbit of extending good deals though Smiley

I connected to the HSDPA service earlier using my Sony Ericsson K850i mobile and was getting 1.2Mbit down and 384Kbit up... also got assigned a real IP address, not an internal private address like alot of services.

Worth noting the excess charge on this deal once the promo times out...

£200/GB

!!!

3/three/whatever is similar on "excess charges"

These deals are safer on a pre-pay basis and I would personally never enter into such a punitive contract.

...just spotted the overseas rates which make bit-torrent on the beach in benidorm a tad pricey methinks -

Costs for data outside of the UK are £3000/GB in EU countries,
or £6000/GB for countries outside the EU.

No worries Smiley

It does reinforce my point that this is a significant trap for the general public.

It's odd really, as the implication of such punitive pricing for extra GB is that mobile 3G carriers really don't want their customers to make full use of the service - almost "you can look but you can't touch".

Or perhaps the intention is to catch out the unwary and/or get lost in the corporate telecomms bill? That £20B+ laid out for 3G licence fees is still to be recouped.

Mobile broadband is now cheaper than ever and ‘free’ mobile broadband could be offered as early as 2009 according to broadband comparison site Top 10 Broadband.

“With competition reaching its zenith in the mobile broadband market, it is only a matter of time before mobile broadband modems (aka ‘dongles’) are offered for free in conjunction with mobile phone packages in the same way as ISPs such as TalkTalk currently offer ‘free’ home broadband with home phone deals.” Says Jessica McArdle from Top 10 Broadband.

I think O2 do have the ability to assign you a static IP using a bearer APN service.
