This looks interesting:

http://www.samknows.com/broadband/pm/signup.html

The basic jist is that you sign up with this service, and they send you a specially modded linksys router. This router sends information back to samknows.com which includes the state of the line, connection speed, and is meant to discover which ISPs are badly shaping traffic!

There are only 200 routers to go around, so please, sign up to volunteer so that we can find out the true deal about the KC network. The more people who sign up from the KC network, the more likely it is that someone will get sent one of these routers.

Note that if we will only publish statistics for an ISP when we have a reasonable sample size or can be certain that our results are not merely an anomaly.

I suppose we could just not bother trying at all ! That way we never have to worry about failing  Wink

Did you not scroll down to this bit then?

If there is sufficient demand for other ISPs then we'd be more than happy to include those too. As the network grows we're keen to include more niche ISPs as well, providing we can get a reasonable number of connections to provide data.

i.e. if you make enough of a fuss, people pay attention to you !! Therefore, if you can be bothered sign up  Grin

Yeh, they prolly wont cover Karoo as they don't cover our exchanges anyway. But worth putting the interest in. So I signed up.

I got a reply from Sam saying he had received quite a few requests from Karoo/KC users and mentioned that he would be in touch as to when I would receive the kit...

Ah cool. I notice that in the list of qualifying ISPs, it now lists

12. Karoo (by popular demand!)

I guess it's just like the saying goes, if you don't ask, you don't get!

Shall I register? It says "You are not a heavy downloader. We'd classify anything above 30GB per month as being too heavy for us to gather useful results."

I guess the reason that they put that cap in is because the kit doesn't seem to run its tests when you're already using the connection. They also won't want the ISP to be able to say "yeah, we throttled that connection because the customer was transferring x amount of traffic..."

It's probably best to be honest, and just send them an email explaining how much you do transfer, when etc... Let them make the decision.

Yeh, just asked them to remove me from it. That will teach me to read properly.
