Just wanted to know how to get into newsgroups, which is the best one, what programs would i need**edit**? Tried torrent but when i got an **edit** MGM got in touch with Karoo and ask them to warn me about sharing or i would be fined next time for copyright blah blah blah. I recommend Newsbin PRO as your newsreader , Astaweb as your newshost & newzbin as your indexing service , What karoo package are you on ?

With P2P it just depends what you are downloading really, how popular the content is etc... and what kinds of encryption your client supports.

Bittorrent, uTorrent and Azureus work fine if the conditions are right, you should be using Block List Manager which will generate a blocking ipfilter.dat to protect yourself to some extent... read up on it.

Newsbin, Newsrover and Newsleecher are all good Usenet clients, as for services, most of the top ones will be fast when the conditions are right, Giganews, Astraweb and Hitnews.eu...

There are copyright agents/agencies looking for people uploading copyrighted material, this is why you have to be careful, KC will cut you off if they are notified by any of these agencies, and KC may charge you to get reconnected. However I doubt a fine will be charged given the small scale of the infringements.

It has been proved before by people, and ISPs who actually protect their customers that an agency handing over an IP, a time and the name of a file which was apparently being shared isn't enough proof, especially on KC given that they use DHCP for assigning IPs - theres too much room for error and false reporting. There are people who have been disconnected by KC who haven't downloaded or shared any material  Huh?

To the mod... I don't know what was mentioned in the thread earlier, but nothing in this post is over the top...

It's worth pointing out, just for clarity  the above section doesn't apply to simply downloading from the usenet as no uploading of copyrighted files occurs Wink  and is therefore the safest, and often fastest method of obtaining files.

I am of the persuasion that you get what you pay for..

I paid nearly £300 for an intertex IX66 back in 2003 and its still going strong.  It connects without fail and its uptime is always measured in months.

Is anyone using anything like a CISCO to connect to KCom lines?  I know KCOM use CISCO as their managed routers, if so can any comment on them?

I used to use a Cisco 837, however due to not needing half its features I now just use a Billion 7402R2M

I often have connection times in months and i'm only using a cheap safecom (swart 54108) router. Would hazard a guess that it isn't the best as it's an ar7 chipset i think. Often heard they are pretty awful.

Best free site to use, in my experience, to search news is binsearch. They have a secure site too -> https://www.binsearch.info/. You need to get NZB files which load in your client, takes a while to get the hang of picking what to download.

Newsleecher as a client is okay, but I have had some stability problems with it. Some of the clients don't support SSL which I would recommend you use. If you use a client without SSL support get Giganews as your provider, they have an app called Giganews Accelerator which encrypts traffic for you.

You'll want Quickpar too. This allows you to rebuild corrupt files. Is a very valuable tool for news.

Only use torrents when you allow only encrypyted connections and with something like peer guardian to block dodgy ip's.

Reason I mentioned Block List Manager to export ipfilter.dat files (ip blocklist file) to the %appdata%\utorrent or %appdata%\bittorrent folder is that the client will use the file, rather than PeerGuardian filtering ALL traffic passing through your NIC.
