so your net is atleast semi-working

they have developed a post code lottery by the looks of it.

anyone else in beverley with 3rd world internet?

hull uni would be a lot higher i would have thought. speed test generally around 130,000 (i work there)

Hasn't Beverley always been known to get worse performance?

Just wondered you see this speed tests for Hull Uni getting 60+mbps download on speedtests, do you actually get that on the network? say someone ran a http download would it really run at that speed or does it have some kind of load balancing so each user can only use say 1mbps?

from my desk i get this, on gigabit lan - nothing to do with the comp services. i have seen it faster than this also.

downloads go around this speed but mostly you get slowed down by the server you are downloading from.

i gather they have a *lot* of bandwidth

What you actually find for the Uni is that they do some very heavy Squid caching within the campus network, which distorts the speedtest results quite a bit. Don't get me wrong - it'll be 'fast' from the Uni\UKERNA\JANET network, but Speedtest doesnt seem to be able to handle this caching accurately so reports far higher speeds than reality. Ie, its reporting the delivery speed from the local cache within the campus network, rather than the speed from/to the outside world

they must cache an awful lot then as everything seems to download at 6+ meg! even very exotic files

yeah - 6+meg is what you'd expect - maybe even towards 10-20meg. However speedtest is showing nearly 140meg - hence my point  Grin

when i say 6, i mean 60,000 (60 meg 6.0/mb/s) - mostly it hovers between 60,000 and 100,000 on downloads. so i suppose the extra 40 is the cache. though i would have thought it would be faster from the cache to this machine. other speed tests give similar results

dont forget the students arent back yet!

Connection Speed 4096 kbps 851 kbps

Noise Margin 6.4 db                 6.0 db

n bransholme.

this is the "best" i have had, i am on pro but i am happy compared to about a year ago, i am now nearly 5 times quicker and a hell of a lot more stable  i dont do a lot of downloading maybe a bit more video watching but i get what i want without much hassle  Grin

I had a Karoo engineer visit my house today to check my connection as I complained about my internet speeds and my line disconnecting all the time...my postcode is HU8 7**, here are my stats at present, I will update accordingly when Karoo have solved the problem,if they do!!!

                                         Downstream  Upstream
  SNR Margin  :                  13.0               6.0  db
  Line Attenuation  :          47.5               31.5  db
  Data Rate  :                     3072             928  kbps

To achieve a good SNR Margin etc (which apparently single figures arent!!!), the engineer had to have my line CAPPED at 3mb, which isnt the best at all.....the engineer doesnt know whats causing the problem, but had visited someone before me and theyre having the same trouble, he had to contact his supervisor to explain the situation and it would appear not all is well in the world of Karoos ADSL2+ !!!!

Your Attenuation is a little high.

How far away from the exchange are you?
