How can we gain attention of our problems with being stuck with one telco? and how competition is good.

I came accross hullbusinessforum.com would getting there attention help?

Any other idea of how we can help stop Hull's telco market being owned by one company?

Competition would be great!

I personally have tried writting to my local MP, my local Euro MP and also writing to ofcom, none of which have provided any real results, significant market power, pah, monopoly more like.

I am sure that the Hull Business forum will be acutely aware of the exorbitant overheads levied by KCOM onto every local business. What's needed is a concept of what alternatives there might be; club together and buy a microwave link across the Humber and use EPS 8/9 circuits to distribute the service, bulk buy and resell Azzurri wifi service (many people may not know that Azzurri offer businesses wifi internet in Hull city centre), set up a wifi mesh and buy bandwidth from YHMAN, runs fibre optics through the sewers and into every house, run micro ducts across the city with fibre optics to every house.....phew

Does anyone have any other alternative suggestions?

Some further information and thoughts -

www.broadband.coop
www.onsnet.nl

Looking at the bigger NGN (next generation network) local access picture, we can draw two main conclusions -

The upgrade from copper wire & electricity to fibre optics & lasers is a once in a lifetime transformation of the underlying technological infrastructure.

Local NGN access will inevitably be a natural monopoly.

Hence, the entire local community needs to be engaged in some careful and strategic thinking about how our local NGN infrastructure is owned and governed so that all local stakeholders, residents, business council and public sector alike  -

Gain the maximum benefits at the least cost indefinitely.

And it is literally impossible for any public company to deliver the above as its shareholders simply will not allow it - why?

Because the interests of shareholders and local NGN subscribers are divergent and fundamentally at odds.

I am convinced that the best way to go is mutual ownership whereby everyone who is obliged to use the local natural monopoly NGN owns a stake in that enterprise.

This approach has already been shown to deliver amazing results elsewhere in Europe and there is a great opportunity for Hull to pioneer cooperative NGN in the UK.

Just my 2p - for now Smiley

What we need is what the Japanese and South Koreans have got.

100Mbps for $55/month.

They even have 1gbps connections now.

Ouch, imagine the cost of sending cables over from those exchanges. Also are those exchanged even large enough to cope with sending cables out to hull?

How much would this actually cost?

Watchdog has covered the story many times, and they are useless because they argue wrong. They always say kcom have a monopoly on Hull, which just means that numpty Anita Pace gives the usual 'we welcome competition its other isps choice not to provide'.
Its not Karoo/Kcom we need to complain to it is the other isps not prepared to enter the area. I don't blame other isps not wanting to come here whats the point of going through so much trouble to provide for such a small (in comparison) market something like 1% of the countries connections.
To be quite honest I'd much rather see Kcom turn many peoples view around and provide the best service in the country but no one would want to pay for it as we are a country of wanting free internet.

Blah my rant over, sorry if I annoyed anyone.

Well put, I think with what most people use the internet for, cost over service is a factor, would be great to see Karoo as a leader in broadband services as they were with KIT TV, or even as they were back in the dial up days offering unmetered service for the cost of a 5P call.

MrX

Well KCom could be a leader in innovation and technology but they are to preoccupied in protecting there patch!!!!

If KCom opened there minds and thought about best practice they could increase revenues and have a open market but they seam to have a difficult time in taking a leap of faith. personally if they took professional advice they could protect the current revenue stream and develop new one in this region.

My IM box is always open and I charge a reasonable rate for consultancy!!!
