Interesting,

So that log doesn't even say who or what location attempted to or connected.

Gotta say, Id use linux only thing that ever put me off is I use my pc for gaming, and not enough is compatable.

Well, it's getting better to be honest. I've just installed the latest version of Ubuntu - Gutsy Gibbon and it feels a lot better than Windows.

I also play Battlefield 2 now and again, so I keep a Windows partition on my PC for playing that (when you install Ubuntu it lets you keep Windows on too for dual boot) so I now only use Windows for gaming, and Ubuntu for everything else.

Other than *some* Windows games (and there's a program called Wine on Linux that lets your run quite a few Windows games) there's not really much that Windows does do nowadays that Linux doesn't.

May give a distro a go, need to reformat windows soon anway.

Last linux I had was Mandriva 2007 edition I believe.

Will have to look and see if any drivers are available for my wireless dongle, had to use something called ndiswrapper last time.

Which should I use? Ubuntu? Kubuntu (as far as I can see that sued KDE instead of GNOME) or else?

Looks like the jury is out then, as i stated before my cursor was never at any time moving around out of control it just seemed to lag a bit.
My PC is not networked to any other PC and never will be.
The clincher for me was having details of the contents of my hard drive quoted to me.
A gifted amature told me "this was no spotty little geek that hacked you it was a professional hack"
The console that hacked me destroyed and corrupted a lot of logs and one of the screen shots i took (i dont know how to post it here) showed the console Id as CA (california?)
Any how just be warned by my experience that karoo does access your hard drive and big brother is watching you.
Stay safe and thanks for the imput

Hi Rob,

As always, we all need to keep ourselves safe on the Internet as there's always some nasty folks out there wanting access to your PC. If I had to assume that it was an external company, my money would be on the anti-piracy lot. Like fastethernet said earlier, they are known to be a bit cheeky when it comes to doing their jobs.

Aha, it all makes sense now,

You weren't hacked by Karoo, you where hacked by MediaDefender.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MediaDefender

You'll notice that MediaDefender is located in LA, California. They don't work for Karoo, they work for the entertainment industry. They police illegal file sharing.

Even so, hacking anyone's PC is illegal, so it's a shame you don't still have documentary evidence of them doing it. MediaDefender have been very naughty lately and something like this would land them right in the shit if it could be proved.

Cheers

Hi one of the reasons i haven't taken this further is that when the techie at karoo gave me this address i jotted it down on a scrap of paper which i cant find(i can already hear the "how convenient" wheels turning.)
I realise that there are a lot of freaks out there and i could be one of them but i am not a digruntled ex employee, i have no paticular axe to grind and certainly have no hidden agenda I dont wish to have corparate lawyers crawling all over me.
Here's a suggestion ring Karoo ask to speak to a supervisor and tell them that you have an issue with the third party monitor that is based in California and as they have already given out the name of the director and corparate address this should not be a problem.
When I trashed my hard drive the word doccument that i had coppied it to went with it but to be honest what was the point in persuing it ?
here's how it would have went.
Dear jap your company hacked me what you going to do about it?
reply Dear sucker PROVE IT !
Game over.

To be fair mate, even without the paper it sounds pretty likely that this company is MediaDefender. The only thing that doesn't quite add up is that the CEO of MediaDefender is recorded as being Randy Saaf. That sounds more Asian than Japanese to me.

I think all in all you'll have to rack this one up to experience, because as you say without any material evidence you can't prove anything to anyone 100%. At least you have raised the possibility of this happening however, so it leaves the rest of us more guarded against the potential of it happening.

Cheers

Hi all

Just a couple of things you may like to have a look at:

How to secure XP and use zone alarm:

http://www.markusjansson.net/erecent.html

And did you know you can now get the full Zonelabs suite for a tiny cost!  Just go to zonelabs and use the link

http://www.zonealarm.com/store/content/company/products/znalm/freeDownload.jsp

I got a printer cart for £2.00 and the full zone alarm suite for nothing for a year.

It is the trial pay optin you need to use.

Maybe this story is of some relevance;

Labour wants to ban illegal file-sharing

Isn't 'illegal' banned then?

By Nick Farrell: Thursday, 25 October 2007, 8:59 AM

A SENIOR government official has warned that if ISPs do not do more to crack down on illegal file-sharing, then Labour will bring in more legislation.

Lord Triesman told the Beeb that the government cannot tolerate stealing and would crack down on illegal file-sharers unless ISPs did more to stop it.

Lord Triesman is the parliamentary Under Secretary for Innovation, Universities and Skills and he wants ISPs do snoop on the use of their customers to find out which ones are pirating and turn them them into the rossers.

He noted that the ISPs were in talks with the music industry and these were progressing better than people might have thought.

Lord Triesman believed that there were going to be successful voluntary schemes between the "creative industries" and ISPs and the government should not have to regulate.

Interestingly enough however Lord Triesman said he did not want the UK to go down the same route as the US. He did not want to see the industry "hounding 14-year-olds who shared music". What he wanted to see was more tracking down those who made multiple copies for profit.
