Hi,

I have a question regarding the connection rate. Until recently I got various connection rates which didn't really follow much of a pattern other than they were generally lower at night. Last weekend I replaced the phone sockets and remove a long unused extension in my house. Since that time I always connect with the same connection rate:

Ds Rate (Kbps)           12283
Us Rate (Kbps)         1021
DS Margin                 10
US Margin                 8
DS Line Attenuation    26
US Line Attenuation    17

(The SNR margin and line attenuation doesn't seem to alter much either.)

The fact that it always connects at the same rate suggest to me that I could connect faster but that a limit has been set manually. Is this likely to be case and, if so, could I ask Karoo to remove the limit to see what happens?

I am in Beverley (HU17) and the line checker thingy on Karoo's site suggests that I am getting the expected average rate (12Mbit/s.)

TIA,
H.

Call up and just say that you believe with your SNR you should be able to achieve a higher connection rate they are usually quite helpful.

FYI apparently the beverley exchange has a problem. That is why they can't change my connection speed back to 1.3/17 (which it has been stable at for days) - it will go to 17.5 then retrain in evening @ 17 and be solid (3.5snr)

If the beverely exchange doesn't have a problem then they were lying to me. They again told me 6snr is the minimum which I KNOW from my experience is about right for SNR at 2 in the morning. NOW my snr is about as low as it is going to go......

Frankly I'm frustrated

its at

Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]:   511 / 16,383

SN Margin (Up/Down) [dB]:   30.0 / 5.0

WHY is my upload so low? I NEED that for VPN work I am doing currently.

AH MY PING IS NOW 26~ THEY HAVE PUT ME ON HIGHER INTERLEAVING TOO

P.S for your attenuation your SNR is poor. I have higher attenuation than you (28) and get 17 meg solid. Go hunting for extension cables, bad filters and the devious ring wire. Or perhaps someone local has a rotating bed that is interfering with your signal.

It seems always to have been fairly poor. I removed the only extension cable in the house apart from the 3m link from upstairs to downstairs and there isn't any ring wire.

Best way is through Command Prompt in dos
In windows xp    goto start-all programs-accesories-command prompt and in the black box that appears type ping www.bbc.co.uk  hit return/enter key  and you should get something like this

Reply from 212.58.251.195: bytes=32 time=15ms TTL=120
Reply from 212.58.251.195: bytes=32 time=14ms TTL=120
Reply from 212.58.251.195: bytes=32 time=14ms TTL=120
Reply from 212.58.251.195: bytes=32 time=14ms TTL=120

Ping statistics for 212.58.251.195:
    Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
    Minimum = 14ms, Maximum = 15ms, Average = 14ms

Hope that helps Smiley

Karoo have increased the d/s rate to 13309.

Connection Status           Connected
Ds Rate (Kbps)         13309
Us Rate (Kbps)         1021
DS Margin         7
US Margin         8
DS Line Attenuation         26
US Line Attenuation         17

They reckon it won't go much higher than that. As for the previously-mentioned low SNR margins, I have tested both sockets and they are the same. The figures above come from my Solwise SAR600EW. If I use my Zyxel router then I get a couple of dB extra margin.

if your snr doesn't change from 7~ you can push your connection faster, until you have 3.5~ SNR margin. that is the minimum. The helpdesk will say 6 is the minimum, presumably because they expect your SNR to fall in the evening.

if it doesnt tell them to put you on the 3db profile, or that they simply dont know what they are talking about (which is often the case). they are often on an ego trip.

try emailing them, lot of users say they get better responses. I however had an awful experience of e-mailing.

Why people have such nicer lines than mine Sad

Connection Speed     14335 kbps     1023 kbps
Line Attenuation    29.0 db    17.1 db
Noise Margin    5.6 db    7.6 db

Attenuations is great but snr is too low, if it gets lower now it will probably drop? hets to 3.5 in evening. (very stable though had over 200 hours connected)

I sent e-mail off at 6.30am this morn requesting speed increase, at 8.40am i received reply stating my connection has now been increased.

pre-increase

Connection Speed     14335 kbps     1023 kbps
Line Attenuation       29.0 db          15.6 db
Noise Margin            9.6 db            12.9 db

After

Connection Speed     16286 kbps     1023 kbps
Line Attenuation       29.5 db          15.6 db
Noise Margin            6.4 db            12.8 db

Only thing is i missed a phone call at 12-05 pm and it seems my connection was interupted at that time...i will keep an eye on it.

amazing line stats,

I can't get above 11070 kbps connection rate,
and even then my speedtests have never gone above 9000 kbps  Sad

Just wondering what routers you guys are all using,

I always get told that my hardware won't allow me to connect any higher,

I'm using a Linksys WAG54GS...
