would adsl2 improve watching live footy streams?
my thoughts are it would not really have any Impact,
as it depends on the numbers watching it

Yep it depends entirely on the numbers really. With that said you could experience less jumpy/buffer periods and be able to watch higher quality streams on ADSL2. Given the time of matches though (usually 3pm kick off) and on a weekend it won't be fun as Karoo doesn't perform well on weekends when it comes to streaming ANYTHING, nor do they perform well in an evening.

if your thinking of justin.tv then the capacity they have in bandwidth should allow many (1000+) to view at the same time.  So in this case it should enable better viewing if the stream is not squashed under any Quality of Service rules that KCOM are enforcing.

It seems that at busy (think 5pm til 1am?) times streaming is relatively hard to achieve.

Contention ratio of ADSL (2+) means that the share of the bandwidth is shared across all those who are using the bandwidth (up to 50 other users?).  So if those 50 are online at the same time trying to stream - not a chance..

Shocked)

you could buy a dedicated 10Meg line from KCOM -
http://www.kingstoncommunications.com/productfinder/internet-and-data/leased-line.asp

if you can afford the massive price.....

Generally the streaming is rubbish, I still try however but generally give up after the 56th buffer in 10 minutes.

However, I watched Hatton the other night when I got in from work - was flawless (obviously because everyone was in bed).

Depends which program/site you use.
I find the justin.tv etc get overloaded and slow.

P2P TVU seems to work fine for me, get nice upload speed aswell (thanks to the adsl2+) for other people (upload is probably really what matters most, if loads of people are watching all with slow uploads it isn't going to work)

Line Attenuation    37.0 db    19.6 db
Noise Margin    1.9 db    12.8 db

Hi guys,

Just watched football online now, and can't believe my connection is as stable as it is at 1.9db snr?

You'd expect it to drop when it goes below 3db, but its stable as hell right now..

Has anyone else had such low snr at this time of night (after 5pm) and still had an absolutely solid connection?

What are your error counts on though (depends what router you have for how to look these up)? it might have to keep repeating data.

plenty of crc errors, but still connected, and still running very stable, I used a "NETGEAR DG834PN " router..

I do use DMT tool to adjust my snr, so what makes this even more surprising, is that my normal connection rate at a usual 6db snr is 9-10mb, so to still be connected at 10mb now at 9.00pm, is very surprising to me..

I've heard the "NETGEAR DG834PN " has a certain chipset that the kc DSLAMS use? so it holds connection better..

System Up Time 05h:24:06

el-ahrairah, thought you where gonna re-pack and sell the netgear in favour of the Linksys WAG54GS...what changed your mind? Mines not been as low as 1.7db but thats some going to hang on.

haha yeh i was going to pack it up and get rid,

Simply because it doesn't sync as high as the linksys,  But i tried a couple of things with this netgear, gave it a second chance and realised that on an evening, it holds sync much better, doesn't drop my connection and can run at a much lower snr then the linksys.. If i ever used the DMT tool to lower the snr to 3db using the linksys, it wouldn't even connect,

If i do this with the netgear, not only does it connect, but it holds stable connection too.

Is it worth getting KC to perhaps change my profile to 3db? how would i go about doing this, I usually email to ask them to do things, but not sure if they would be willing to do this, and whether its better for me to do it in 'my' situation..

Do you just use dmt tool or you run a dgteam firmware?

If you use the dgteam firmware you get a nice page like this

Could you post a screenshot of your dmt graphs please, want to see how your snr/bits are in the higher frequencies.

Think my line has problems somewhere Sad + connects slower now (probably due to winter weather)

miken, i just use DMT tool, but would be interested in having the nice page you have for your settings,

your attenuation is far better then me, with such an attenuation you should be getting 14mb surely?

mine is 37db and i connect stable at 11.5mb now,

but i must admit, after 5pm on weekdays it doesnt quite hang on, and slowly drops to 10mb.. which still isnt too bad..

If I connect early morning it will connect at 14. But does drop a few times a day.

DGTeam website is http://dgteam.ilbello.com/

DG834PN page is http://dgteam.ilbello.com/index.php?pid=6

Basically justs adds functionality to the routers pages.

Best one is this advanced adsl settings, set the snr % there and it will connect using that to save using dmt each time.

got it, works great thanks, gives you a few very handy extra's doesn't it..

I connect at start of the day at 11.5mb, but by 7-8pm ish it usually drops to 9.5-10mb.. I guess that isn't so bad, just wish i was closing to an exchange hehe..
