Simply put, how would an alternative ISP set up here in nomansland without using Karoo's ridiculous wholesale prices?

Satellite?

Running Fibre Optic from BT exchange? (I think there is one in Hull somewhere, wouldn't it be possible to completely usurp KCOM like a Trojan Horse and use BT wholesale prices instead?)

Microwave Link?

How about this new '3G' Service? Any thoughts on that?

Also I have another question, I've heard that Secondary Schools in the "KCOM" area have fast connections (compared to the rest of us), but they use "ERIL": (Electronic Resources in Libraries Home) is that an independent ISP? or is that just an educational reseller from KCOM?

Also, about bloody time someone set up a site like this!

Well done.

Are they a KCOM reseller or do they connect from BT?

Azzuri have their own private link on KCOM's opti-switch platform back to their central offices. Hull schools internet link to provided via YHGFL which link back onto the YHMAN network, they still require opti-switch links though.

Screw wireless, its way toooo slow and I have yet to see a really robust mesh platform yet, 20Mbit backbone is just too slow. Fibre is the future!

So would it be possible to totally ignore KCOM's presence here and put fibre down from BT? (ignoring the fact that it would be uneconomic)

Anyone with the correct planning permissions could lay fibre in the ground, I know there are companies in Hull which own fibre ducts with private fibre running in them.

There are plenty of companies other than BT which could provide a large internet pipe.

So, to clarify, in theory, you could lay down (with planning permission) your own fibre connection from outside KCOM into the KCOM area? How many people would this be able to serve?

Yes you could lay the fibre, if you were laying fibre I would recommend a large core cable, say 32 core. That cable could support 16 x 10gig links, that would be enough to provide internet bandwidth for everyone in Hull.

The real question is who would provide the internet pipe on the other side of the fibre.

Just had a word with a friendly BT network manager.

New Ductwork - Softsurface (includes wayleave costs)       35.00

New Ductwork - Footway (includes wayleave costs)       80.00

New Ductwork - Carriageway (includes wayleave costs)       140.00

That’s pounds per meter for new ductwork and fibre
