Can a Newbie ask the members if they are familiar with PCLinuxOS? I have tried a couple of distros in the past and been unable to get anywhere with them.
I now have a 'Live CD' of PCLinuxOS which I run now and again. I would like to install it on my Optiplex GX260 which currently runs Win XP Pro. If possible as a dual boot system.

I dare not install it just now as I just cannot get either Karoo or the Internet, in spite of the system telling me that my Speedtouch 330 is connected correctly. I am finding it so frustrating as the remainder of this distro is very useable and quite fascinating. If only I could sort out the Internet and Mail I would probably go for the dual install option. Does anyone know anything about the problems I might be having?

I should mention that I am not a 'techie' in any way, so any help at al would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Cypher

A simple solution to that would be to Buy an ADSL router and connect through the Ethernet port on your laptop.

Many thanks for the help. I ought to say that the Optiplex GX260 is not a laptop but a small footprint PC. Not to worry. The web site was very good, but I did not find that it helped me in this instance.

Right. I failed to get anywhere with the Speedtouch 330, the frustration was getting to me, so I dumped it and installed the Speedtouch ST-510 instead. Well at least with the 330 I did get some choices and an assurance that it was(honestly) connected on PCLinuxOS, even though these assurances fell flat when it failed to connect either to the Internet or collect my Mail. Sadly the ST-510 is not recognised by PCLinuxOS, so I am really stuck.

Not to worry. I am now looking for another Linux 'Live CD' that will accept and run my ST-510 modem. But is there such a distro? I wonder if any of them accept such (soft) modems and am I condemned to never being able to run Linux. I hate to even think of such a thing.

I think you are all wonderful guy's and wish you all the best in all you do. Thanks for everything. Cypher

The ST510 is an ethernet router. Provided your network card drivers are working there should not be any problems. You don't need to install any software or run any CD's. Just plug in and run through the setup within the browser window.
