Line Attenuation

Hi people,

I have a question which has been baffling me..

When i used a Linksys WAG54GS router, My dl line attenuation was 37.5db.

Then When i switched to a Netgear DG834PN, My attenuation changed to 37db.

Now i have just checked again, And was surprised to see my attenuation had changed again to 36.5db.


Correct me if i'm wrong, but is line attenuation based on the distance you are from the exchange, in my case, when it was 37.5db, I was just over 2km away from the exchange apparantely..

So my question is, how is it possible that my attenuation has lowered? I haven't changed location etc..

some routers give different readings.

perhaps the attenuation is around 36.5 -> 37 and the modem cannot decide. i think stuff like moisture/temperature can change the readings.

are you using the same cable to the router?

I am yes, I think i have figured out why/when i get the diff reading with this router..

i'm using DGTeam with my netgear router, and when i just select 'Modulation type' and select just ADSL2+

Thats when i get 37db

But as soon as i set to default, which auto selects the following:

G.DMT
G.Lite
T1.413
ADSL2 (G.992.3)
ADSL2+ (G.992.5)
Reach Ext. ADSL (Annex L)
Double Upstream (Annex M)


This is when i get the 36.5db reading, So by selection some of the above, the reading seems to alter..
