HI.
First post but been monitoring this site for a while.
My SNR is usually around 10ish but on a evening it drops to around 7ish.
Recently, maybe the last 3 weeks or so it has been dropping to 5ish. My line seems stable still but think i keep getting a few line errors.

STATS:-
System Up Time 76:04:38

Port        Status                       TxPkts         RxPkts   Collisions    Tx B/s    Rx B/s    Up Time
WAN       PPPoA                       36888         49008          0            84         520      22:33:56
LAN        10M/100M                 393061      731318          0            1388     797      76:04:34
WLAN     11M/54M/108M           462077             0           0            636        0         76:04:29
 ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 6144 kbps 511 kbps
Line Attenuation 50.0 db 34.0 db
Noise Margin 7.3 db 20.2 db

Am i ok to drop as low as 5? Is it worth asking KC to drop my line maybe by a meg or so?
Also in the above stats taken from my router stats page, which if any of the information is describing line errors please is it collisions? What do they all mean exactly??

Any help greatly appreciated.

Mat

PS am using a Netgear DG834PN router

Hi Matt,

SNR values tend to drop during the evening for many reasons one of which is that there are many more people making calls and using their ADSL on an evening which will generate 'noise' on your line. It's perfectly normal for your SNR to drop later in the day and nothing to worry about.

KCOM prefer to have your SNR in double figures however the broadband max service can handle very low SNR values without dropping the line or generating significant errors.

I am surprised your line is able to support 6meg given your distance from the exchange I would have expected to see a line profile of maybe 4.8meg.

Right to cut to the chase, the real underlying issue it are you happy with the performance of your line? Do you find that sometimes your internet is off and on?

Because in my opinion "if it t'ante broke don't try un fix it".

Yeah fair comment. My line never really disconnects unless i disconnect it. My SNR at the moment is 12.8 but last night dropped to 4.9. Is this such a normal fluctuation though?
I am happy ish with my line (wish it was faster) so maybe should just shut up!

To Mattyc,

Don't be hard on yourself, you should always ask. There are no stupid questions only stupid answers. I think your line is running as quick as possible without causing issues to browsing. In terms of getting better speeds one answer is to download out of hours i.e. between midnight and eight o'clock. Another way to bypass KCOM's bandwidth throttling machine is to set up a server that could download files outside of KCOM's network and then download said files to your local machine via HTTP from a non-black listed domain.

To Descandcaz,

WOW!

How are you managing to get that speed on that line? The line attenuation suggests you are about 5km from the exchange, by rights your line should only support 2mb on ADSL2+ and only 1.5mb on ADSL MAX.

Sit back and enjoy the speed Smiley
