hi all. i am a semi noob. i am from hull and have the max 8mb i think (the most expensive option anyway). i have a netgear DG384GT router was flashed with latest firware Version 1.02.13 this morning as yet untested but my prob was when i had Version 1.02.04. dunno if the flashing will cure my prob yet. when i go into status i get. ADSL Link Downstream Upstream Connection Speed 8160 kbps 448 kbps Line Attenuation 37.0 db 26.0 db Noise Margin 11.4 db 28.0 db
this is now -8am sunday and i know for a fact last night the noise marging was only 9db. i am addicted to battlefield 1942. thats not the problem though. my problem is while playing bf 1942 online and using the ventrilo voice software i regularly get disconnected for about 10 seconds, enough to kick me from bf but i remain connected to ventrilo i just cant talk or hear for 10 seconds. i rang karoo and asked them to turn my speed down and this as good as fixed the prob. i was down to just over 5000kbps and got disconnections once a fortnight or month. i had my line renewed and a new faceplate filter and speeded it back up to 8meg but the prob still remains. my mtu has been set to 1400 for ages. what are my options? i dont want to slow my connection down cos i dl a lot of stuff. i have heard of an ubergt firmware and have read about tweaks for the gt by enabling debugging and or telnet (dont have a clue what that is!!) and then setting up a new sn margin value or summat. lost the webpage now and cant re google it!!! any help most gratefully received cheers al

Hi Aljolson,
From the info you have posted your line is still connecting @ 8Meg (8160 kbps). I would recommend you ask Karoo to reduce the line profile which should give you better stability, if your line can not support 8Meg and you want a stable line then I am afraid you'll have to take that hit.
You mentioned you have altered your MTU to 1400, is this on your computer and router? An MTU mismatch may introduce unnecessary overhead when transmitting data.
Debugging and telnet could be useful troubleshooting tools for diagnosing problems although I would recommend sticking with the official Netgear firmware, unless you know exactly what you are doing.

Plus that sync speed is higher than the apparent maximum of 8128k
However his line looks like it should be able to cope with it...

i adjusted the mtu to 1400 in the netgear router settings via internet explorer as told by a pal that it would keep things stable. what should it be set too? i can download in the early hours at almost full speed but tea time early and evening i slow right done. according to speedtest to 1900kbs at the moment and downloads slowed to 27kbs. my noise margin is 7db. i have flashed loads of bios and dvd players firwares and know the pitfalls of flashing via internet etc. however i dont really understand what all the settings will do. i see there is a way to overide the Target SNR on the gt. will this improve things? also the telnet server whats that all about? cheers for help so far

The MTU should be set to 1500 on your PC (use Dr TCP to change it) and 1500 on the router.
Due to Karpoo fair use policy during peak periods your bandwidth will be throttled back to allow everyone to browse the web.
Telnet is a protocol which can be used to remotely manage a device, its accessed via a dos prompt and might allow you access to some hidden features on your router, mac address tables etc. It will not speed up your internet connection magically. I was under the impression your problem was line stability?

A small increase in your target SNR could improve your stability reduce your disconnections and decrease your sync rate (i.e. speed). You could use DMT http://dmt.mhilfe.de/&hl=en&ct=clnk&cd=1&gl=uk or via telnet using the "adslctl" command to alter your target SNR temporally and see if this improves your connectivity. Karoo could also alter these setting permanently from the exchange.

Working link for dmt, http://www.2cent.de/dmt/v8/dmt.zip use it as Fastethernet said to increase your SNR which will hopefully increase stability.

You need to enable debug, this command will enable it; http://0.0.0.0/setup.cgi?todo=debug(0.0.0.0 = IP address of DG834GT)
