Well here goes
Fttp BLOODY FAST!!!
But running this is not going to be cheap, but we would have the only network in the UK with FTTP to the street or even door!
How far do we go what would be a solution, and how would we progress this.

Maybe the council could be a strategic partner for this project.

We should aim to have fibre to every property, use a system like micro ducts where we can blow extra fibre down the same cable to expand capacity. We should be looking to support a full MPLS network.

Our aim should be to create a network which businesses would view as an opportunity to sell services over.

But do the council still have loyalty to support kcom by protecting them from other development?

And even if micro ducting was used wouldn't pretty much any street that wanted fttp need to have a hole all the way along it? Unless as I read on net a while ago the microducts where within the sewage system, we could use TISP

Lol! Thats Hilarious! The network really would be s**t  Grin

There isn't any loyalty to KCOM as the council has sold off all of its shares. Nowadays fibre can be laid at walking pace and only disturb as much tarmac as the width of the cable.

Come on Gents Direct fibre to residence isn’t going to happen but if you put a distributed high bandwidth loop in then spur Fibre into the residence from PCP boxes in the street you’re still looking in the Gigs.
This would also be a good place to put a WI-FI node !!!!!

TDM time devision multiplexing on a high bandwith loop then fiber distibuters from the cabinets so you would still have FTTP but not the density at the exchange head.

Fasterinternet, hmm your idea of getting the Council involved is not so bad.  It would not take too many residents of Hull to complain to their councilors about KCOM and point out an alternative.....

For that to happen we would need to know figures and how to kick the whole thing off..  I wonder if lottery of EU funding could be obtained for a project of this magnitude?

Would we need intial interest or sponsors do you think?
And.. if we were to get that far when (if ever) do you think the Council would take note?  I heard a bit back about the some of the Council workers attempts to reduce costs (council tax monies!) by introducing a MAN but being let down by nepotism and back scratching amoung KC and the council...

Since those days seem to be (thankfully) gone and a different regime in power it may be worth having looking at this..

Whats your thoughts?

spot on but it needs to be out of council control (a nice little VLan at a resnobel cost would be a sweetener for them)

It makes sense to get the council involved as they own the roads/lampposts etc. plus they could also offer a large chunk of funding.

The body put in charge of this network should be non-profit.

I dont think it would be in the councils control, more like a not-for profit business or organisation..  but.. I refer back to the council as they have a legal responsibility to represent their customers - US...

So if enough of us make a fuss, and more importantly make the effort and do something then I am sure the Council will listen.
I reckon they use a lot of KC links, and we all know they cost the earth..  I am sure they will be able to cut costs quite a lot..

In fact - does anyone know anyone that works at the Council that can provide this information?:
  • How many linked lines does it use?
  • How much does it spend (total) for the links?
  • How much does KCom charge per km?

We can always use the "Freedom of Information Act" to gain the knowledge.....

Any one want to take up that mantle?   Cheesy

So the general consensus seems to be....

Get the council involved (if possible) / seek funding from non-profits / invite businesses to provide services via fibre.

OK. Sounds interesting. Where from here?
