I do think it's important we define the scope of this project, do we want to offer this service just in Hull or the wider area as well?

Wider area! I dont live in Hull but hate being stuck with kcom.

I think it's important we register ourselves as a non-profit organisation with a structure if we want to be taken seriously.

We are aiming to create another monopoly, this time around the benefits of said monopoly will be for the community not for the KCOM fat cats.

Where would one even apply to? Is what we are planning good enough to warrant a NPO status in the eyes of the Law?

To be honest guys this project has to be self sustaining. This means we have to cherry pick locations and routes so that revenue can be generated.
This will then snowball as more customers sign up we would have more funding to expand the network. We have to realistic in our goals but that doesn’t mean that it won’t happen. In the end its always going to boil down to cash.

Gents I think your missing the point!

Even if users are happy with Karoo and they do improve the internet service the costs and future service provision is always going to be about 6 years behind everyone else.

FTTP what can we provide over it

•   HDTV (Sky, Virgin)
•   High speed internet with low contention
•   Community CCTV coverage
•   Dark fibre for large companies and councils and we are lucky we
have TWO (hull city, east riding)
•   MPLS (big bonus for business)
•   Phone services (residential and business)
•   Secure VPNs for Police, Ambulance, Fire
•   Wi-Fi nodes from Green boxes so provide service for (cloud, Vonage,
                Pon)

FTTP would be 10 years in front of everyone else !!!

Interesting piece about community CCTV coverage, looks like it could be a winner from a marketing point of view.

Just one thing, although theoretically optical fibre could transfer at 70+ mbps how much would each user actually be able to get? if each user could get 70mbps that would mean a ridiculously large pipe to bt would be needed which surly would be extreamly expensive, wouldnt services up to 10mbps be needed with traffic shaping? how could a company cope with many users maxing 70mbps connections?

Not every user will be utilising the full capacity of their line at the same time and it is likely some sort of QoS will be employed. Unlike KCOM the community ISP will provide the fastest connection for the lowest price and not skim off profit.
