Hi all,

just wondering if anyone else on karoo, is using site to site vpn and geting better upload speeds then between 30kBps and 40kBps in one of our offices where getting 20kBps!

and do you use smb file sharing over the vpn links, finding its almost pointless to even use it?

Users are timingout before opening a word document on another server over the vpn

according to karoo on all there business packages you can get up to 1mbps(128kBps)
sucks that im getting a 3rd of that max and 3 of our offices are in town, less that half a mile away from the exchange

we have a office on ferensway and thats getting 256kBps down and 20kBps up max is there something wrong with ferensway lines!?

ive contacted karoo about it and i asked if what can they do to improve the upload, they said they cant garauntee upload speeds... great! :|

anyone else havig similar problems? have any solutions?

Thanks
Alex

well ive been doing some reading and researching into our connections.

most of the offices dont have hardware capable of finding this info out, but i have a cisco 837 running at one of them...

Code:
Noise Margin:    15.0 dB                          6.0 dB
Output Power:    20.0 dBm                        12.0 dBm
Attenuation:     14.5 dB                          9.5 dB
Defect Status:   None                            None
Last Fail Code:  None
Selftest Result: 0x00
Subfunction:     0x15
Interrupts:      658 (1 spurious)
Activations:     3
Init FW:         embedded
Operartion FW:   embedded
SW Version:      3.9.220
FW Version:      0x1A04

                 Interleave             Fast    Interleave              Fast
Speed (kbps):          8128                0           960                 0
Reed-Solomon EC:          0                0             0                 0
CRC Errors:               0                0             9                 0
Header Errors:            0                0             5                 0
Bit Errors:               0                0
BER Valid sec:            0                0
BER Invalid sec:          0                0

and my speed test results

doesnt add up does it?

attenuation is 14.5db which puts me at about 1km away
my snr should be atleast double that for a healthy line
and im syncing at 8mbps, so there myabe a bit of a problem on the line then yes?

Which package are you actually on?

Looking at KC business packages they offer adsl2+ based connections, which are upto 20mbps down and 1mbps up.

Excellent looking line, on adsl2+ it would probably manage atleast 18mbps probably 20mbps

Just checked and from what I can find the Cisco 837 doesn't support ADSL2+. The first to support it is the 877. So that explains why your only syncing at 8128Kbps (The max sync for adsl1).

If your on adsl1 I'm not sure but KC may have only allowed adsl1 connections to use 448Kbps upload (based on the out of Hull area bronze page (silver is 832Kbps) which may be applied to adsl1 based connections who knows) The stats you posted below only seem to show the downstream stats.

If you are on 448kbps upload then 0.44Mb/s would be maxing the upload. As 448Kbps gives around 40KB/s

Edit: found http://cisco.com/en/US/prod/collateral/routers/ps380/ps4874/product_data_sheet09186a008010e5c5.html

Cisco 837 Router ADSL Specifications
• ST-Micro DynaMiTe (formerly Alcatel Micro Electronics) ADSL Chipset (20150)
• T1.413 ANSI ADSL DMT issue 2
• G.992.1 ITU G.DMT support
• G.992.2 ITU G.Lite support
• G.992.3 ITU G.hs ADSL type negotiation

Doesn't support G.992.5 Adsl2+

Is it only syncing at 204Kbps down?

If so there is something wrong with the line, not sure how lines are setup in offices but if you can put the router in the master test socket (behind the faceplate) and see what it connects at.

204Kbps down indicates a line problem, either with internal wiring or out on KC's network which you would have to get them to look into.

Try this to get the Draytek Stats.

Quote
Draytech Vigor 2600 / 2800

    From the web interface http://192.168.1.1
    > OnLine Status

You can also telnet into the CLI to get a fair bit more information.
    telnet://192.168.1.1
    The required command is:
    > show adsl

See what the http based stats can show, but also get the telnet stats as they probably show more info.

DS Actual Rate          :  2304000 bps
US Actual Rate       :   288000 bps

Shows you are connecting at;
Down: 2304Kbps
UP: 288Kbps

Which shows you are on the 2mbps package. 288Kbps is far to low for an office expecially when using vpn. You should be able to get put on adsl2+ and get 1mbps upstream which is about 4 times the current upstream and will make a huge difference.

You need to contact KC and ask about upgrading to a newer package that line looks to be even better than the other one, man I'm jealous Tongue

Glad I could help, let us know how it goes when you call them.

I'm only 17 doing a levels I have considered also doing the CCNA, how much of your time does it take? It would be a great qualification to have if I wanted to further develop it and go into networking.

its taken me about a year to do ICND1 and ICND2

its tough though, i found it quite difficult to grab some concepts at first

but you should do it, is a really good qualification to have if this is the field your wanting to go into
