Hi all,

Thank you for your patience whilst we looked into the issues last night. The problem was due to ‘illegal’ streaming of football between 8pm and 9:30pm last night (Tuesday 16th March). This type of video traffic increased from the normal 125Mbps at peak to about 275Mbps, and consequently had a substantial impact on general performance for the majority of customers online.

To avoid this happening in the future (as more and more people will stream illegal video online) we are going to remove this type of video traffic from the 'general' bandwidth pool and put it into its own bandwidth controller, so it is only contending with itself. The new bandwidth controller will be sized to give adequate video quality on a normal night. This will ensure we can provide more consistent package performance when such matches occur.

We aim for this measure to have no adverse impact on other video traffic, such as BBC iPlayer, 4oD, ITVplayer,SkyPlayer, etc.

We hope you find this information helpful and look forward to any feedback you have. Once again we would like to apologise for the issues you experienced last night and would like to assure you we are doing everything we can to not only manage network performance to be 'fair for all' but also plan ahead to future proof your online experience.

Many thanks

Hi All

We are aware of the performance issues on the network last night. We are investigating this and will update you as soon as possible. We would like to apologise to you for any inconvenience caused - please rest assured we take these matters extremely seriously as we endeavour to manage performance on the network fairly for all.

Kindest regards
Karoo

Well considering the packet loss and network speeds have been like this...well....every night like clockwork from about 7 pm to midnight for over a month now...

And the Tech Support was basically 'Er, we don't know, everything should be fine.'...

I have little faith

It was like this, then last week seemed ok(ish), then Monday and Tuesday night was awful this week.  Monday there was football too wasn't there, Liverpool?

The problem here is that Karoo are curing the problem by lowering the priority of "illegal" football.  But there is clearly a problem of insufficient bandwidth, I'm not an expert on football streams, but from what I gather they are low bit rate, poor quality.  Now, if each of these "illegal" viewers paid Sky £10 to watch on Sky Player, we'd be worse off as its much higher quality, it's legal, and what would Karoo do then?

My speed now is around 3.5mbps on Karoo Max Option 2.

With regards to Packet Loss - surely any decent packer shaper would not result in packet loss. All I can assume is the packet shaper has too low a buffer for the amount of shaping Karoo are putting in place and so packets end up being dropped.  This does make the situation worse I fear sometimes.

And results for current moment in time.

Still not great. It'll probably nosedive again in about five minutes. This of course makes it pointless for me to do any form of online gaming as it certainly can't be done reliably with the packet loss that hits until gone midnight.

i got 0.2mb last night, its not acceptable.  i dont think you can blame the footy last night folks.  i want some money back for hours of wasted time trying to play xbox live, and now my kill/death ratio dropped by about 10% due to the constant freezing and lag.  karoo, why do you think that this service is acceptable?  i think you should come around my house, kneel before Zod, and beg humble apoligies for the disgusting service that we are forced to accept.

But what recompense will you give to pay back the proportion of monies you have taken for the service that you are not providing?
its all well and good stating speeds download limits and times ,but surly you need to invest in more bandwidth so that people can watch perfectly legitimate videos and download none illegal files when they want ,
Schedule for after midnight you say.thats all well and good but the purpose of live  steams is just that live .

Yeh even with the increase speeds by reseting the my router, I guess its russian roulette which routing inside the KC network you get, I still could no stream legitimate iplayer streams.
